I hope you all had a great weekend! Did you do anything fun this weekend? This morning we talked about tornado formation and some US facts.
Here are some interesting Wisconsin tornado tidbits:
-Wisconsin averages 23 tornadoes per year.
-In 2025, Wisconsin had 39 tornadoes which is our 6th biggest year on record since 1950.
-Our biggest outbreak in 2025 was May 15th when 15 tornadoes ripped through the state and also included 2 EF-2 tornadoes.
-Wisconsin’s Worst Tornado occurred on June 12, 1899 in New Richmond in St. Croix County. This tornado killed 117 and injured 125, and destroyed over 300 buildings.
-The National Weather Service says six tornadoes in Wisconsin match the severity of the EF5.
The Journal Sentinel says the 1996 Oakfield tornado caused $40 million in damage, but no deaths. The Barneveld tornado in 1984 took nine lives and injured 200 others. In 1958, 19 people died when an EF5 twister churned a path from Baldwin to Colfax.
The three others occurred in the 1800s. One-hundred-17 people were killed in the New Richmond tornado of 1899. An 1898 tornado in Abbotsford and Antigo killed 17. The Darlington tornado of 1893 caused five deaths
-Tornadoes have happened every month now for Wisconsin! That’s thanks to the February 2024 tornadoes!
