Good evening Wisconsinites,
Damaging winds from storms is our biggest danger in Wisconsin. Hail is up there and also tornadoes. Damaging winds can cause more damage, because it’s a much wider path than a storm and can potentially have the same wind speed. We get 1 derecho per year. The worst damaging winds in Wisconsin history often stem from powerful derechos and intense tornadoes. Top events include the July 15, 1980, Derecho (112+ mph gusts, $240M+ damage) and the July 19, 2019, derecho, which produced 100+ mph straight-line winds, cutting a 60-mile path. There was also a powerful one that ripped through the state in 1998. I vaguely remember it as I was 12 years old at the time. What storm do you remember for damaging winds?
